Backup & restore overview
Because Morgue is local-first, your library lives on your machine — which means backups are in your hands, and they're simple.
What's in a backup
A Morgue export is a single .zip containing everything:
- Images (the asset files)
- Palettes (and their colors)
- Folders and tags
- Boards — including their items and connectors
See exactly what's inside in Exporting your library.
When to back up
- Before a big cleanup (like running the duplicate finder).
- Before moving to a new computer or deactivating a device.
- On a routine cadence — a monthly
.zipto an external or cloud drive is cheap peace of mind.
Restoring
Import a backup .zip to restore — even onto a brand-new install. Imports de-duplicate automatically, so restoring (or merging) never piles up copies. See Importing a backup.
Moving the library
Separately from backups, you can relocate the whole library folder to another drive — see Moving your library.
